Zhang Hengqu said: "When the Buddhists speak of the ultimate reality (bhūtakoṭi), they arrive at what those who know the Way call sincerity; even if they attain it, it is sincerity that hates clarity." Now, for Hengqu to consider ultimate reality to be sincerity is acceptable, but to say that it is sincerity that hates clarity is unreflective. The Śūraṅgama Sūtra says: "The culmination of clarity is the Tathāgata; the culmination of purity is the penetration of light." The Lotus Sūtra says: "Universal clarity illuminates the world, with a clear and resolute mind." How could one who hates clarity be like this? Lord Wen (Sima Guang) said: "What is marvelous in it cannot surpass our school; what is false in it I do not believe. The marvelous lies in egolessness; its talk of heaven and hell is not worthy of belief." Now, for Lord Wen to regard egolessness as marvelous is acceptable, but not to believe in heaven and hell is unreflective.
