Bai Letian admonished himself, saying: 'In human life of a hundred years, seventy is rare; even if you are granted an allotment of seventy, you are already forty-four this year—how much time remains in the twenty-six years ahead? Do you not consider the affairs of the past twenty-five or six years? They passed swift and fleeting, like a single dream.' Is its death then not extremely easy? With a life so difficult to obtain, curtailed by a death that arrives so easily, can one not be cautious and apprehensive, alarmed by day and vigilant by night, to make plans for liberation? The Buddha revealed the dharma-gate of liberation to all under Heaven; all who possess blood, breath, mind, and intellect may hasten toward it and enter. Yet can anyone understand it other than those of uncommon spiritual capacity and outstanding intellect, who have attained right view and do not fall into wrong views? The complete text appears in the original edition; the remainder is not recorded.
