Now, when a filial child cares for aging parents, he pleases their minds and does not oppose their will; he pleases their ears and eyes (The Book of Rites' 'Inner Lessons' says: Zengzi said, 'In nurturing parents, nurturing their will comes first.' 'Pleases their minds' means accommodating their minds so they are joyful and without sorrow. As for 'will', it is the activation of the mind, having that which it desires; hence one must also first be sincere in thought so that there is no opposition. Inquiring with a pleasant voice is the way to please their ears; warming them with a gentle expression is the way to please their eyes).
