Mencius spoke of 'being fond of goods and wealth and partial to one's wife and children' as being unfilial. But our śramaṇas abandon wives and forsake wealth; in this Way, they can be said to accord with it! Why, on the contrary, are they blamed for being unfilial? Those who study the Buddha understand the transient fragility of the ways of the world, and clearly distinguish the good and bad of the affairs of the times. (Zang means good; fou means bad. What is false and unsubstantial is called 'fragile.' It means that those who study the Buddha first understand the unreal and unsubstantial affairs of the ways of the world, and afterwards clearly examine the principles of good and evil in the affairs of the present.)
