客曰。吾聞持戒者。防一切惡。發一切善。清淨無染。不茹葷物（客引釋氏戒法言。我聞戒者凡一切惡事防護不可為。一切善事可行。決當發方為清淨不染。又不可用五辛葷茹。以是徵難）。

The guest said: "I have heard that those who uphold the precepts guard against all evils, bring forth all good, are pure and undefiled, and do not eat pungent food. (The guest cites the Buddhist precept rules, saying: 'I have heard that for those with precepts, all evil matters must be guarded against and not done, and all good matters must be practiced and definitely brought forth—only then are they pure and undefiled; nor may they consume the five pungent roots or pungent food.' With this he poses a challenge.)
