直欲自營其衣食。備歷於艱苦。庶知世道之勞慮（吾門諸祖。直要自經營於衣食之備。以歷於艱辛之苦。庶以知世人耕織之道艱難。則節儉其用也）。

They simply wish to provide clothing and food for themselves, fully experiencing hardship and toil, so that they may understand the labor and cares of the mundane world (all the patriarchs of our school simply wanted to manage their own provision of clothing and food, experiencing the bitterness of hardship and toil, so that they might know the difficulty of ordinary people's plowing and weaving, and thus be frugal in their use),
