夫禮者忠信之薄而亂之首（言禮者。非合無為之道也。故老子所謂禮者。忠信之薄而亂之首也。言不務其內而修飾其外。故禮則出乎人偽也）。

Now, ritual is the thinning of loyalty and trustworthiness, and the beginning of disorder.' (This means that ritual does not accord with the Way of non-action. Therefore what Laozi called ritual is the thinning of loyalty and trustworthiness and the beginning of disorder. It means not attending to what is within while adorning what is without; hence ritual emerges from human contrivance.)
