'If an earthworm were placed in the five flavors, or a dog or pig were given rich wine and sweet liquor to drink, they would surely consider it poison. Why is this? Because it does not suit what nourishes them. If an earthworm is cast into a muddy pool, or a dog or pig is fed dregs and swill, it will surely wriggle and bend, wag its tail and kick its hooves, following along with delight. Why is this? Because it suits the way of what nourishes them. (Wriggling and bending is the appearance of an earthworm moving; wagging its tail and kicking its hooves is the appearance of a dog or pig being joyful.)
