設與亦非聖也。敢以此道而擬於聖人乎。若果以乘鸞跨鳳稱之為聖。則仲尼老聃不為聖也。夫聖者通也（夫聖人者一切通達也。非乘鸞跨鳳之稱也）。

Even if they did join, they are still not sages. How dare one compare such a way to sages? If riding simurghs and mounting phoenixes truly warranted the title of sage, then Confucius and Lao Dan would not be sages. The 'sage' is one who penetrates through (a sage is one who penetrates and realizes all things; it is not a title for riding simurghs and mounting phoenixes).
