母懷八十一年。誕於李樹下。遂指為姓（老氏父姓韓名乾字元卑。母曰精敷。孕經八十一年。生李樹下。因以為姓名耳。字伯陽。身長四尺六寸額凸眉麁。反脣折鼻。臀尖胯闊。聃耳髼頭。故曰老聃）。

His mother carried him for eighty-one years and gave birth to him beneath a plum tree, whereupon he pointed to it as his surname. (The father of Laozi was surnamed Han, named Qian, with the courtesy name Yuanbei; his mother was called Jingfu.
