The potter's wheel of creation fashions things equally, yet life spans vary in shortness and length. Heaven and earth shelter and support all, and the foolish and the wise are born together. Thus we know that supreme sages and supreme worthies have been absent from no era; yet past kings and past emperors rarely had the fortune to meet them. Looking upon Ourselves, Our virtue is thin and Our conduct slight, Our wisdom minute and Our strength shallow. Fortunately, by the blessing of past affinity, We have met a true man. Since taking the soothing medicine, Our hands and feet have gradually felt lighter and relieved. Exercising further care and prudence, We hope for a complete cure. Comforting Our weary person, We rejoice within; but indebted to this divine recipe, We feel much shame. We rely solely for Our life upon the subsequent medicine, hoping that a long life may be expected. We earnestly hope to transcend this fleeting world and endure forever, keeping an unchanging countenance unfading; that hair already white will turn from plain to black, and a body already worn will cast off decay and grow ever more robust. Can this mind and this wish be fulfilled? We only offer Our deepest sincerity, reverently awaiting this fine art.
