1.32

沙門玄奘啟。中使曲臨。光命隆渥。伏奉神筆所寫六門陀羅尼經一卷及題大菩薩藏經等六十六卷。殊私忽降。愓然惟咎。惠澤光被。欣若登高。竊以。至教希夷。理出窅𰩑之外。玄章沖邈。道闡言象之間。顯晦從時。行藏在運。非屬淳和之化。豈弘幽賾之訓者哉。伏惟皇太子殿下德隆天地。道昭圓光。三靈宅心。萬邦式望。布慧雲而蔭火宅。擊法皷而警幽途。霈然蒙潤。超然逈濟歟。夫皮紙骨筆之誠。曾何足諭。亡身殉隨命之誓。顧彼多慚。斯乃慶集皇靈。永馭金輪之運。福滋聖善。速紹玉毫之位。玄奘內省庸菲。觀道慶辰。生微用淺。空荷榮渥。不勝抃躍之至。謹奉啟陳謝以聞。輕繁省覽。伏用惶悚。謹啟。

The śramaṇa Xuanzang states: The palace envoy deigned to arrive, bearing an abundance of radiant commands. Reverently I received one fascicle of the Ṣaṇmukhī-dhāraṇī-sūtra written by your divine brush, and your inscriptions on sixty-six fascicles of the Mahābodhisattvapiṭaka-sūtra and others. Extraordinary favor suddenly descended, making me fearful and conscious of my faults; gracious moisture shone upon me, making me joyful as if ascending a peak. I have humbly heard that the supreme teaching is silent and subtle, its principles going beyond the distant and indistinct; the profound texts are tranquil and vast, its Way expounded between words and images. Manifestation and obscurity follow the times; action and withdrawal depend on fortune. Were it not for an era of pure harmony, how could the instructions of profound mystery be propagated? Humbly I reflect that the Crown Prince, His Highness, has virtue towering over heaven and earth, his Way illuminating the halo of light. The three spirits abide in his mind, and the myriad states look up to him as a model. He spreads the cloud of wisdom to shade the burning house, and beats the dharma drum to warn the dark paths. We are copiously moistened, and transcendently ferried across afar! Indeed, could the devotion of using skin as paper and bone as brush ever suffice as a comparison? Looking at the vow to sacrifice the body and follow with one's life, I feel much shame before it. May this celebration gather upon the imperial spirits, perpetually driving the fortunes of the golden wheel-turning king; may blessings nourish the sage and virtuous, swiftly succeeding to the seat of the jade ūrṇā! Looking within, I find myself mediocre and meager; seeing the Way on this celebratory day, my life is minute and my use is shallow, yet I vainly receive abundant glory. Unable to bear the utmost of my dancing joy, I respectfully present this memorial to express my thanks. Lightly encumbering your review, I am filled with fear and apprehension. Respectfully presented.
