The śramaṇa Xuanzang states: I have respectfully received the imperial edict granting permission to bestow the sovereign brush to inscribe in person the imperially composed stele text of Dacien Temple. The imperial seals and mandates have arrived; the compassionate silk-cord decrees have fallen in abundance upon me. Respectfully bearing them with shame and dread, I know not what to do. Xuanzang has heard that when a powerful crossbow is drawn to its bowstring, a field mouse is not enough to spring its trigger; when a great bell conceals its sound, a tiny mosquito cannot cause its resonance. Never did I imagine that the radiance of the sun and moon would turn its light upon the empty gate [of Buddhism], or that the nourishing rain and rising clouds would manifest their influence upon this profound temple. This was indeed my wish, yet how could I have dared anticipate it? I humbly consider that Your Majesty walks upon wings and rides the heavenly pivot, holding the records and continuing the dynastic fortune, surpassing the Yellow Emperor and outstripping Zhuanxu, conceiving the Xia and swallowing the Yin. You expound all wondrous things to cultivate the age, and encompass manifold abilities to make customs illustrious. Within the Nine Domains, all have been bathed in the benevolent breeze; beyond the Four Heavens, all are likewise moistened by the profound transformation. Thus, regarding the dharma of the ford and bridge, none but the utmost sage is sufficient to elucidate its source; and as for the task of esoteric assistance, who but the consummate man could unfold its traces? Although the ultimate devotion to the departed naturally moves Your Heavenly sentiment, yet as the unseen aid was prayed for, the imperial regard turned immediately. The heroic words have been bestowed in detail, already surpassing rare treasures of the age; the secret traces are about to unfold, exceeding priceless gems. Among all living creatures, none does not rejoice and revere; and those fellow monks are doubly overjoyed. Dreaming of the great music of the Jun Heaven is not wondrous compared to this; obtaining the crest jewel of a wheel-turning king—how could it be prized above this? We shall surely carve it upon durable stone to establish it in this courtyard of blessings. Those confused and deluded living beings will at last have their ears and eyes opened; the torch of the Dharma will burn brightly, transmitted into future ages. May those who gaze upon the precious characters and look up to the silver strokes give rise to bodhi on this very day; and may those who recite the bequeathed text and fathom its esoteric depth awaken to prajñā in this very place. Though the kalpa-city is exhausted of mustard seeds, this illustrious beauty will endure forever; though the shifting seas encircle the mulberry trees, this luxuriant breeze will never decay. Xuanzang came from the common lot and has long been ashamed of his conduct and karma. After receiving the tonsure, I contemplated propagating the profound principle. Going forth to Kapilavastu, I relied entirely on the August Transformation. Coming down to this translation work, I have once again received courtly encouragement. During the Zhenguan era, I undeservedly bathed in immense compassion; and since the Yonghui era, I have further presumed upon extraordinary favour. The divine brushes of the two rulers have conferred lavish praise; the sacred literary creations of the two courts have enveloped me in lasting honour. Reflecting on my own folly and inferiority, I truly harbour apprehension. My sincerity in repaying this debt is unforgotten day and night. Yet as the depth of Your grace is like a vast abyss, how could a drop of water repay it? As the generosity of Your bestowing is like the lofty Mount Song, not a speck of dust could give thanks. I can only rely on the power of wisdom, wielding it without bounds, to aid the imperial shrines at the garden mausoleum and assist the prosperity of the dynastic foundation for seven hundred generations. Unable to bear the utmost reverence, I respectfully submit this memorial of thanks through the Imperial Attendant inside the Palace, the courtier Wang Junde. Venturing rashly before the August Majesty, I bow in profound trembling. Respectfully submitted.
