The śramaṇa Xuanzang states: On the fourteenth day of this month, I respectfully received the imperial edict sending the imperially composed and imperially written stele text of Dacien Temple, together with the presentation of ninefold music as an offering. As the sun of Yao shares its light, it first adds to the radiance of the torch of wisdom; as the sea of Shun spreads its waves, it further fills the breadth of the Dharma stream. The great stele rises lofty and sheer, its heavenly writing shining brightly, resembling tinted clouds mirroring the Holy Vulture Mountain, and seeming like clustered constellations descending upon the immortal peaks. All among the monastics and laity rushed like lightning and coursed like thunder; beholding it, they leaped for joy at what was never known before. I consider that the eight trigrams set down writing and the six lines initiated the commentaries; observing the birds, rules were established; weeping for the lin, scriptures were expounded. The consummate work of sages was fully displayed herein: it serves to model all things as a standard, institute teachings according to the times, fashion all living beings, and elevate heroic reputation. Yet the stone inscribed by the First Emperor of Qin only displayed excellence on the Feng and Shan sacrifices; the stele carved by the Emperor of Wei merely recorded achievements in loud renown. Still they were praised as masters, looking down upon a hundred kings. How could they compare to the Emperor personally wielding his sagely literary skill and deigning to unfold his immortal writing? The golden music sounded its tones; the silver strokes displayed their traces. Fathoming the nāga palace, it surmounts the Three Mysteries; surpassing the phoenix script, it exhausts the eight styles. Stiring spring ripples, it gives rein to thought; dripping autumn dew, it marks its marvel. It propagates the wondrous principle of the One Vehicle and assists the esoteric depth of the Six Perfections. Its transformation encompasses the realm of the three thousand worlds, and its fame soars beyond the ten billion realms. The subtle words of Āmrapālī's orchard become ever more manifest through the heavenly words; the bodhisattvas of the Bamboo Grove become increasingly honoured by relying on the divine brush. This truly causes brahmacārins to turn their hearts, cutting off the net of doubt and revering the instruction; it causes Māra to change his thoughts, flattening his mountain of heterodoxy and yielding to the Way. How is it only that persons of the secular world begin to awaken from their straying ways, and guests of the dream realm advance beyond the bounds of suffering? Since the Semblance Teaching spread eastwards, nearly six hundred years have passed. The splendour of its propagation has never been as grand as now! When Emperor Ming of the Han received spiritual response, he still consulted Fu Yi; when the ruler of Wu turned in reverence, he still examined doubts with Kan Ze. From then on downward, none was worthy of mention. Transforming beings according to conditions, this illustrious era alone is exalted. Good deeds are bound to bring response, which will firmly elevate a flourishing foundation. Like a golden wheel-turning king, Your divine merit is fathomless; like the emperor with the jewelled crown, Your auspicious fortune will long endure. Xuanzang has undeservedly presumed upon the court's favour, and has been fortunate to ascend the market of the profound. Meeting with this re-spreading of clouds of compassion and the sounding anew of the dharma drum, the transformation through the trividyā has flourished, and the gates of the Noble Eightfold Path have opened wide. Considering my own lack of true sincerity, I have vainly and continuously received your encouragement and guidance. Looking up to the high heavens, I receive Your grace; looking down to the deep valleys, I harbour shame. Unable to bear my sincere reverence, I have respectfully gone to the court hall to present this memorial of thanks. Disturbing the sovereign presence, I am deeply stricken with trembling. Respectfully submitted.
