The śramaṇa Xuanzang states: Having respectfully received the gracious edict allowing Shanluo and others to enter the monastic order, I leap with devotion beyond bounds, sorrow and joy arriving together. I reflect that the moisture of clouds and rain still requires an upturned vessel; the illumination of the sun and moon is still obstructed by an overturned bowl. Yet the gracious waves of the Sagely Emperor have reached beyond all limits, and His utmost benevolence and radiant favour have indeed surpassed my portion. I humbly consider that Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress hold the wondrous enlightenment of the spirit within and manifest traces of skillful means. Therefore, they are able to examine thoroughly the tathatā and turn the wheel of the Dharma in the nine realms of existence; with compassionate care for all beings, they rescue those sinking in difficulty in the three evil paths. Thus, Shanluo, Fatong, Chuyan, and the others were enabled once again to be cleansed in the heavenly waves, and once more to dry themselves in the sagely sun; parting the Yellow Springs to ascend into the Pure Sky, clearing the Burning House to be sheltered by the cloud of the Dharma. Though the kalpa-stone be worn away to nothing, this grace will never perish. Though my humble person should perish in vain, how can I attain the means to repay it? May the merit of shaving their hair dispel afflictions from the Pepper Chamber [of the Empress]; may the power of complete ordination offer blessings along the fragrant path. I humbly pray that the Emperor and Empress will enjoy a life of ten thousand springs, consolidate the brilliance of a hundred blessings, long preside over the Purple Culmen, and forever shelter the populace. May the Spring Palace [of the Crown Prince] flourish ever more, its jade boughs putting forth blossoms; may the fiefs of the green realm be favoured and fortified like great boulders, radiating fragrance in the vermilion mansions. Xuanzang frequently reflects on himself: I have no virtue to offer the age, and no merit to offer the state; yet I have undeservedly bathed in extraordinary grace, which has accumulated over years and months. When have I not been filled with fear, feeling ashamed before my shadow and losing heart, forgetting to eat and failing to sleep? Even the bamboos of the Xiang River would not suffice to write down this grace; even casting away bodies numerous as the sands of the Ganges, who could repay these gifts? Still relying on heavenly favour, I prolong my breathing for now. Unable to bear the utmost gratitude and appreciation, I respectfully submit this memorial to convey my thanks. Soiling the imperial crown and mian tassels, I bow in increasing dread. Respectfully submitted.
