The śramaṇa Xuanzang states: Entangled by karmic burdens, Xuanzang brought on illness and suffering; between a breath and an intake of air, I was nearly cut off from this illustrious era. Suddenly I received from the Emperor and Empress thoughts of kindness and compassion, extending concern for my very life. Imperial messengers frequently visited, offering more than ten consolations; divine medicines were sent down to rescue me, as if receiving a miraculous pill. Bathed in sagely compassion, my severe pains were at once dispelled; receiving medical care, I have now attained complete recovery. How could I have expected that a departing soul would be summoned back by the Sovereign on High, or that a life about to be cut short would receive vitality again from the Great Furnace? Stepping back to reflect on my lowly insignificance, how could I deserve this? Clutching my breast in overwhelming shame, words are not sufficient to express it. Bearing such extraordinary grace, how could I endure it? Even pulverizing this humble body would fail to thank You. I now hope to apply myself diligently to rites and recitations, exhausting this body and mind, in order to repay Your boundless grace and somewhat fulfill my endless duty. Unable to bear the utmost gratitude and reverence, I respectfully submit this memorial of thanks. Joy and dread mingled together, I know not what to do. Respectfully submitted.
