The śramaṇa Xuanzang states: Xuanzang has heard that the Yijing praises the principle of daily renewal, and the Shijing celebrates boundless offspring. Thus the Zhou mandate exceeded its allotted span, and the Han lineage stretched far into the distance, because they conformed to this Dao. I have also heard that where the Longmen currents swirl, the source is long and the stream flows far; where cassia trees grow in groves, the roots are deep and the fragrance lush. I humbly reflect that the sacred lineage of the imperial house has succeeded one another through successive sages, overlapping squares and doubling compasses, planting benevolence and righteousness, and nourishing the black-haired people for a very long time. Hence the two sovereigns gloriously received the great treasure, laying the foundation for their descendants; it may truly be called deep roots and a long source. When it came to Your Majesty receiving the spherical jade, Your achievements grew ever more flourishing: You returned to simplicity and embraced purity, surpassing the traces of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors; You instituted rites and composed music, outstripping the precedents of the Yin and Zhou. You do not hold the imperial carriage in high esteem, but focus Your mind on saving the myriad commoners; before dawn You seek Your clothes, and after the sun declines You forget to eat. You select and train brilliant worthies, deploying them throughout the official ranks; You promote the capable, cast down the transgressors, and devote Your energies to the correct path. One man sits with folded hands, and ten thousand leagues are cleared. Even the flourishing of Kings Cheng and Kang did not reach this height. Consequently, auspicious clouds billow thickly, and rivers and seas are without waves; the frontier lands follow Your customs, and dragons and ministers are bathed in Your transforming influence. Vast and towering, it can hardly be described in full! Thereupon, Your Dao reached the azure vault, and the bright spirits sent down blessings: in an auspicious month and joyous season, an imperial prince was born. The heavenly branch spreads lushly, and the jade calyx unfolds anew; all living beings throughout the realm rejoice and rely upon it. As for Xuanzang, my feelings are far beyond the ordinary: how could I merely rejoice in the holy Empress's well-being? In truth, I also rejoice that the Tathāgata has an heir! I humbly pray that You will not countermand the former decree, but immediately permit him to leave home: moving the offspring of the human king to become a son of the Dharma King, donning the Dharma robes, establishing his Dharma name, conferring upon him the three refuges, and enlisting him in the ranks of the Saṅgha. He will revive the Semblance Teaching, spread the profound wind, bring the dhyāna grove to bloom anew, and make the garden of awakening shine again. May he follow the glorious traces of Śubhavyūha and tread in the lofty footsteps of Candracchatra, sever the two kinds of fetters, and attain equal, supreme awakening! May his physical body be subtle and marvelous, like the King of Mountains; may the net of flames adorning him surpass the sun and moon! Then let him cast the shade of the cloud of compassion over the great chiliocosm, raise the torch of wisdom over the hundred billion continents, strike the Dharma drum to subdue the heavenly Māras, and brandish the victorious banner to crush the non-Buddhists! Let him scoop up those drowning in inverted seas, extinguish blazing fires on mountains of heresy, exhaust the deep river of afflictions, and shatter the gigantic shell of ignorance! Let him become a Tamer of Men, a Teacher of Devas and Humans! My sole prayer is that the former ancestral shrines and ancestral spirits may, by relying on the grandson's fortune, ascend to the other shore; and that the Emperor and Empress, through their son's blessing, may enjoy ten thousand springs, eternally holding the divine diagram and constantly presiding over the nine domains. If a son can act thus, only then is it called great filial piety; only then is it bringing glory to parents. That Śākyamuni abandoned his kingdom to pursue bodhi was precisely for this! How could this be compared in quality, day by day, with the petty goodness of Dongping, or weighed in depth, year by year, against the mediocre talent of Chensi? I have respectfully prepared the robes and held the bowl, awaiting the arrival of the guest of 'ehi bhikṣu'; I have swept the seat and cleared the road, awaiting the carriage that scaled the city wall. Unable to bear the utmost joy, solace, and eager expectation, I respectfully present this memorial to inform You. Rashly touching the imperial presence, my trembling and dread increase anew. Respectfully stated.
