The śramaṇa Xuanzang states: Yesterday I received the gracious decree ordering Xuanzang to shave the head of Prince Foguang, and also commanding the ordination of seven monks. The shaved hair represents the falling away of the Prince's afflictions; the ordained monks constitute the completion of the Prince's attendants. Thus the palace of Pāpīyān was shaken, and the minds of the Śuddhāvāsa devas leaped for joy. The great vow having been proclaimed, brilliant blessings flourish all the more. How could I have expected that these mediocre, lowly hands would perform their art upon the heavenly skin, or that ordinary commoners would be favored to enter the Dao at such an auspicious gathering? High and low rejoice and delight; sorrow and joy intertwine. I humbly consider that weighty protection is what comes first in swaddling clothes, and the cause of liberation begins with the shaving of the hair. I humbly reflect that the Emperor and Empress have their Dao congealed beyond forms and their blessings spreading throughout the realm. Hence You gloriously open the marvelous gate and cultivate the root of virtue. I pray that the imperial steps receive blessings, that the throne is prolonged in harmony, presiding over the hundred billions and all under heaven, completing countless tens of thousands of years. May Prince Foguang be well-nourished during nursing, guarded by good deities and having his head patted by all the Buddhas, increasing his splendid and wise countenance, properly fulfilling the charge of continuing and exalting the lineage! As for the newly ordained monks, having deeply received this favor, they should also diligently strive in their spiritual path, focus single-mindedly on their vinaya practices, and faithfully fulfill the imperial command, awaiting the spreading of the kuśa grass. Unable to bear the utmost of gratitude, I respectfully present this memorial to inform You. Respectfully stated.
