The śramaṇa Xuanzang states: I have heard that swift wings that beat against the wind soar into the sky in a matter of days; the bright pearl reflecting the moon reaches fullness in slightly over ten days. Hence we know that those endowed with a spirit beyond ordinary things, displaying their brilliance in the midst of Heaven, have surely manifested their exceptional beauty and renewed their splendor. Prince Foguang has drawn upon supreme goodness to form auspicious signs, unfolding central harmony to nurture virtue. Ever since his birth in the subtle garden, the heavenly temple was stirred to behold him; with clear, sagacious breath and a peaceful heart, he receives blessings sleeping and waking; with a jade countenance and outstanding bearing, his radiance increases morning and evening. Were it not for the Emperor and Empress having the sun of wisdom within themselves, their thoughts cleansed by the stream of the Dharma, entrusting the succession to the bedrock and initiating the tonsure among devas and humans, who could bless these swaddling clothes, settle this nursing, free of calamity and harm, and bring about early wisdom? Now the bright light completes its first cycle, and his full-moon posture flourishes; the ming-plant grows another leaf, and his lotus-like eyes shine brightly! Thus the purple palace is comforted in heart, the black-haired people all rejoice, the seven assemblies take refuge and rely upon him, and the four gates wait to behold him. Is it merely seeking talented words day by day, or waiting to rein in the crane-drawn carriage? Xuanzang is fortunate to receive gracious favor, granted Your sheltering shade; though the prospect of a teacher-disciple bond is beyond my hopes, the feeling of shared monastic life truly presses upon my heart. I venture to present one scroll of the Heart Sūtra in gold characters together with its case; one tableau illustration of the Sūtra on Repaying Kindness; one set of kaṣāya Dharma robes; one censer, one incense box, one incense table, one water-jar, one scripture stand, one rosary, one khakkhara, and one tub for bathing-beans, to serve as requisites for the Path and to express my private joy. I hope that they may take their place beside the half-jade bi-disk toy and replace the mugwort arrows used to ward off evil, so that good deities will leap for joy upon seeing them, and his great vow will thereby become steadfast. For rashly presenting them, I am truly filled with trepidation. I humbly pray that the Emperor and Empress, whose nobility surpasses the polar star and whose brightness matches the celestial lights, may unite the joyful hearts of the myriad people and enjoy longevity across ten thousand springs. May the Crown Prince clarify his brilliance, surpassing Cao Pi and King Zhao to claim distinction; may the favored princes enhance their excellence, galloping ahead of Liu De and Liu Pengzu! I pray that Prince Foguang may have his head patted by a thousand Buddhas, a hundred blessings congealed in his body, his virtuous renown flourishing day by day, never departing from the ancestral standards. Unable to bear my gratitude, I present this memorial to inform You. Rashly touching the imperial presence, I prostrate myself with deep dread. Respectfully stated.
