The śramaṇa Xuanzang says: The envoy Li Junxin arrived and delivered Your handwritten decree. The silver strokes of the characters are more splendid than vermilion writing; the refined composition is as rich as the Yellow River Chart. Grandly it carries the forms of peaks and mountains; luxuriously it holds the atmosphere of wind and clouds. Unexpectedly, in the late autumn, I have once again beheld a composition radiant as spring flowers; while dwelling between the Yi and Luo rivers, I have suddenly gazed upon the treasures of Kunlun and Mount Jing. Holding it with reverence, I am filled with joy, dancing with hands and feet. In the past, when Jizhong was honored with the courtesy of the ruler of Wei, it merely described their parting; when Huiyuan was favored with a letter from the Jin emperor, it only granted provisions of rice. Never was there seen language that contained the import that emptiness and silence could be housed anywhere, or instruction showing the principle that the great recluse abides in the court and market. Thus I know that the holy sovereign's heart explores the divine and exhausts the mundane, synthesizing what exists and encompassing what does not, soaring higher than the Yellow Emperor, and surpassing the rulers of Wei and Jin. / However, Xuanzang's nature is like raw silk, which particularly fears red and blue dye; my body is like a creeping vine, which truly hopes to cling to the pine and medlar. My wish is to mingle with the mists and clouds at Mount Shaoshi and keep company with the springs and rocks at the slopes of Mount Song, thereby satisfying my wish to avoid drowning and fulfilling my determination to prevent the fire. Therefore I dared to exhaust my foolish blindness and risk death to report to You, hoping that the potter's wheel of Your compassion would not abandon wild ducks or quail, and the moisture of the clouds and rain would not forsake spiders. Yet the enlightened decree has descended without granting its understanding and permission, instead bestowing words of praise and condescending to shed its glorious illumination. The five emotions within me tremble with fear, not knowing what course to keep. Since the decree commands me to withdraw these words, I cannot bear to petition again. Reverently submitting this expression of gratitude, I am only filled with increasing trepidation. Respectfully stated.
