The śramaṇa Xuanzang says: Xuanzang is mediocre and hollow, yet had the fortune to join the ranks of fellow monks. During the Zhenguan era, I was early bathed in exceptional favor; since the Yonghui era, I have received the utmost imperial bounty. Reflecting upon my meager abilities, I am constantly ashamed and deficient. Since receiving the imperial decree to translate scriptures fifteen years ago, I have had no leisure day or night, and my mental and physical strength are completely exhausted. Now aged sixty, I have also contracted rheumatism; my mind is bewildered and erratic, no longer normal. Decay and illness succeed one another; how much of the forward road can remain? Since I am now incapable of devoting myself to translation, how can I improperly presume upon such vast grace? I beg that the monks currently engaged in translation and other duties be permitted to halt their work. I request permission to take one or two disciples to move and reside at Yuhua Temple, where I may occasionally translate small sūtras and also engage in recitation, thereby supporting the prosperity of the state from above, and finishing out my remaining years below. Furthermore, I request five guards to protect me as before, hoping to bear the imperial benevolence and be spared calamity and illness. Unable to contain my utmost sincerity, I reverently present this memorial to the court for Your consideration. Intruding upon the imperial majesty, I am deeply terrified. Respectfully stated.
