I have examined your memorial, and learned that you wish to conceal your traces among crags and springs, emulating Lin and Yuan to surpass the past, and entrust your thoughts to the serenity of meditation, following the example of Cheng and Shi to set a standard for the present. Admiring your refined bearing, I truly hold it in esteem. My achievements are hollow and my learning meager, unable to fathom profound depths. Yet with my shallow understanding and limited learning, I do not see that this can be allowed. The Dharma Master is a bridge across the three realms, guiding and delivering the four forms of birth. Your wisdom is as brilliant as the lamp of the mind; your meditative absorption is as settled as the waters of thought. You are not obscured by the dust of worldly sentiments; how could you be startled by the waves of consciousness? Where the Way and virtue reside, why must it be among the layered peaks of Mount Hua? Where emptiness and silence can be housed, why should it be only amid the double ridges of Mount Shaoshi? May you withdraw these words and make no further petition. In that way, the great recluse of the court and market will not only be valued in ancient worthies, and the broad benefit of seeing and hearing [you] can be all the more treasured in our own age. Decree. (Dispatched from within to Dharma Master Xuanzang).
