傳之大都
Alas, O Great Being, / You served our three imperial courts! / In the Way, you were the Emperor's Master; / In official rank, you had ceremonial equal to the Excellencies. / Formerly at Mount Guangcheng, / The Yellow Emperor followed the prevailing wind. / After more than three thousand years, / There was once again Duke Su! / The supreme vehicle of Yoga, / The secret tally of true words— / Bestowed and received through six generations, / The lamp was transmitted in unbroken succession. / The narrator has set this down, / Resplendently arranged in orderly sequence. / On land, you subdued the mad elephant; / On water, you calmed the Tianwu monster. / With a compassionate heart you quelled violence; / With the power of wisdom you subdued the ignorant. / Quietly responding and penetrating— / How could that be fathomed? / The dream of libations between the two pillars came to pass; / The twin śāla trees changed color. / With the rank of Minister of Works he was favored at the end; / The title of Rectitude and Correctness proclaimed his virtue. / The heavenly envoy offered the farewell sacrifice; / The sovereign's heart was sorrowful and grieved. / An edict ordered the erection of a precious pagoda / In the corner of his former courtyard. / Below are interred the śarīra; / Above is adorned the stupa. / Traces diverge in arising and ceasing, / But the Dharma is free from being and non-being. / Carving this stone with verses, / May it be transmitted to the great metropolis!
