Compiled by the śramaṇa Shi Yuanzhao of Ximing Temple in the Upper Capital, Chang'an

1.2

The Tripiṭaka Master of Daxingshan Temple of the Great Tang was taboo-named Zhizang and styled Amoghavajra; in Sanskrit, he was called Amoghavajra. He was originally a person of the Western Regions. In the past, he served the Tripiṭaka Master of the Great Propagation of the Teaching, Vajrabodhi, and received the mantras [from him]. For twenty-four years he lifted his robes and sought instruction. After the Great Master passed away, he returned to the Five Indias. He thoroughly examined and read Sanskrit manuscripts of Yoga, journeying far and wide to peruse them all. Returning, he hastened to the Imperial Capital. He taught in Hexi, or returned to Guannei. In the final years of the Tianbao era, barbarian cavalry entered the Pass. In the second year of Zhide, the two capitals of Chang'an and Luoyang were recaptured. The Upādhyāya personally received the sacred decree, meticulously erected the maṇḍala altar, and served as the abhiṣeka master, enjoying the favor of three successive reigns. Memorials of thanks, edicts in response, and exchanges between master and disciples amount in total to one hundred and forty-four pieces. They are hereby divided into six fascicles, so that they may circulate in the future and those who love learning may know his aspiration.

The Tripiṭaka śramaṇa Zhizang of Daxingshan Temple states: I have heard that only Heaven is great, and none but a primal sage can execute punishment in accord with Heaven; only the ruler models himself on Heaven, and none but a rising ruler can nurture all beings on behalf of Heaven. Prostrating, I reflect that Your Majesty's merit surpasses the establishment of the cosmic pole, and Your Way excels the primordial chaos. You have inherited Yao's precious chart and restored Yu's magnificent achievements. Recently, though the chief villain was destroyed, the remnant rebels still went astray. Your Majesty, in righteousness, awaited their turning of weapons, and in grace, prioritized offering them leniency. After briefly exerting the brave troops, the wolves and jackals have been forever wiped out. From the capital outward, all is purified; the terraces and towers await the imperial visit. Your Majesty bowed to the desires of the people and overcame difficulties in harmony with the mind of Heaven. Mountains and rivers have not moved; gardens and parks remain as of old. Now that the imperial carriage has arrived, the sacred governance is renewed. You are about to manifest repayment to the Vast Heaven and succor this populace with benevolence and longevity, leading the celebrations for the Retired Emperor as at Fenyang, and offering sacrifice to the Supreme Deity upon the Circular Mound altar. You turn the wheel of Dharma across aeons vast as the sands, and hang high the sun of the Buddha, illuminating thousands of realms. Zhizang has long been steeped in the royal transformation and now beholds once more the rites of Han. The sustenance I have received is immense; how can I ever hope to repay it? Unable to bear my supreme joy, I have respectfully come to the Yintai Gate to present this memorial offering congratulations. Lightly encroaching upon the imperial majesty, I prostrate in deep trepidation. The śramaṇa Zhizang, truly alarmed and truly afraid, respectfully speaks.

Imperial Rescript of the Qianyuan Guangtian Dasheng Wenwu Xiaogan Emperor

1.10

(Posthumously titled Emperor Wenming Wude Dasheng Daxuan Xiao.)

1.11

"The cunning scoundrels have long committed cruelties. Heaven detested their calamities, and they were finally defeated and destroyed. Looking upon the city gates, they remain as ever; overseeing the officers and commoners, all is at peace. The height of My emotion and solace resides deeply in My heart. What you have congratulated is noted."

Memorial Congratulating the Recapture of the Eastern Capital, one piece

1.13

The Tripiṭaka śramaṇa Zhizang of Daxingshan Temple states: I humbly hear that the government troops have presented victory, recapturing the Eastern Capital. The rebellious faction melted away like ice; the royal army alone prevailed. All living beings rejoice, leaping with joy beyond measure. Zhizang has heard that 'those who go against virtue perish, and their self-made evil cannot be escaped'—this is recorded on bamboo slips and is truly a maxim! Since the wild barbarians brought turmoil to China, three years have passed. Spirits resent them and men are outraged; their guilt is ripe and their evils full. Your Majesty ate late and dressed before dawn, sharing meals and wine equally with your men; consequently, Your ministers exerted their full strength, and the brave warriors competed to be in the vanguard. Your temple stratagems left nothing amiss, and your divine merit needed no second trial. Taking advantage of this irresistible force, You met with their turning of weapons. In a single military campaign, three victories were won, and in succession within ten days, both capitals were recovered. Truly, none of this could have occurred without the far-reaching reach of Your sage plans, the extraordinary brilliance of Your heroic strategy, and the sacred power that supported it, excelling high above all former rulers. You are about to diligently honor the Eastern Peak and manifest repayment to High Heaven. Zhizang is fortunate to dwell in this glorious era and stands waiting to observe the magnificent rites. Unable to contain my boundless joy, I have respectfully come to the Yintai Gate to present this memorial offering congratulations. Lightly encroaching upon the imperial majesty, I prostrate in deep trepidation. The śramaṇa Zhizang, truly delighted and truly joyful, respectfully speaks.

Memorial Congratulating the Return of the Retired Emperor to the Capital, one piece

1.19

The śramaṇa Amoghavajra states: Amoghavajra has heard that the Way precedes the ruler; when the ruler's Way is pervasive, then divine merit operates unseen. Filial piety is the root of virtue; when perfect virtue flourishes, one can receive the primal tally. Prostrating, I reflect that Your Majesty responded to Heaven and inherited Yao, followed the people and restored Yu. Without altering things, the two principles of Heaven and Earth were brightly viewed; before twelve days had passed, the two capitals were pacified. You truly reached Vast Heaven, and Your virtue surpassed that of all previous sovereigns. To the east, You bowed to the assembly of lords; to the west, You welcomed the Retired Emperor. Donning the imperial robes, You guided anew the imperial carriage; clearing the celestial steps, You prolonged the Dharma congratulations. Heavenly Father and Heavenly Son, before Heaven and after Heaven, leaving the Changhe Gate and returning to the ninefold palace, You rectified the cosmic cords and thereby brought peace to the myriad commoners. This was truly the Retired Emperor bequeathing his instruction and yielding merit, rising higher than before the Primal Sovereign; it was Your Majesty seizing the moment with ultimate virtue, standing first among all rising kings. It is fully sufficient to serve as an illustrious model in the annals of history, truly matching Tang and Yu. Born to partake in this prosperity, Amoghavajra happened upon this glorious spectacle. Unable to bear my supreme joy, I have respectfully come to the Yintai Gate to present this memorial offering congratulations. Lightly encroaching upon the imperial majesty, I prostrate in deep trepidation. The śramaṇa Amoghavajra, truly delighted and truly joyful, respectfully speaks.

Imperial Rescript:

1.24

Memorial Giving Thanks for the Bestowal of Incense and Stating Personal Feelings, one piece

1.25

The śramaṇa Amoghavajra states: The Palace Emissary Wu Youyan arrived and proclaimed the sacred decree: as Amoghavajra's cloister today held a vegetarian feast, renowned incense was specially bestowed, and an imperial emissary was dispatched. Having received such immense favor, my rejoicing cannot be described. Amoghavajra is truly delighted and truly joyful. Relying upon the shade of the Dharma stream, Amoghavajra thought to propagate the esoteric teaching. Wandering alone over ten thousand li, I studied across the Five Indias. Focusing my contemplation on the ten directions, I paid homage to the Buddhas of the Padmagarbha; specializing in the five divisions, I plumbed the mantras of the Garden of Jetavana. Constantly arranging the syllables and contemplating the mind, I devoted myself to praying for protection, wishing to rely upon the power of the great vow to encounter the appearance of a Wheel-Turning King. Maintaining sincere devotion for ten years, I repeatedly met the enlightened sage. In former years, before the Hangu Pass was opened, while Your Majesty was cultivating virtue in the Spring Palace, I early on received Your virtuous words and Your gracious inquiries, and You also bestowed incense and medicine, secretly dispatching them for empowerment. When Your Majesty toured north, although Amoghavajra did not have the privilege of accompanying You, my disciple the monk Hanguang and others, returning from the west, were able to personally meet the imperial carriage; amid the rugged military expedition, they were privy to the discussions of the imperial succession plan. Although Amoghavajra was trapped in barbarian territory, my heart constantly served the imperial court. Frequently receiving secret edicts, my offerings all reached You. Your Majesty's sage plans operated uniquely, and the Dharma's power provided dark aid. The host of villains scattered and perished, and the imperial sovereignty was restored. Amoghavajra's humble self has again received imperial favor: in the tenth month, the palace was purified to establish an assembly to ward off demons; at the New Year court, an honorary title was presented, and You even came to the abhiṣeka altar. Painting and decorating the upper palace, practicing fumigation and cultivation in the side halls, having already permitted translation, You furthermore allowed the ordination of monks. The moistening favor is already deep; when can I ever repay it? I will respectfully bathe the images during the three periods and perform homa every half-month, hoping that the thirty-seven deities will protect the enlightened king's realm, and the sixteen protectors will augment the sage emperor's majesty and power, granting longevity like the Southern Mountain, everlasting without end. Unable to bear my supreme gratitude and joy, I respectfully present this memorial to offer thanks. The śramaṇa Amoghavajra, truly delighted and truly joyful, respectfully speaks.

Presented in a memorial by the Tripiṭaka śramaṇa Amoghavajra of Daxingshan Temple.

1.28

Imperial Rescript of the Guangtian Wenwu Dasheng Xiaogan Emperor:

1.29

"The Master manifested his presence in the Western Regions and opened the Dharma in the Central Kingdom. Regarding your former vows, Our mind is fully aware. Walking across as many lands as the sands of the Ganges, you have brought about great meritorious power. In your travels since recent times, you have constantly kept karmic conditions in mind. Now the bhikṣu inquires into the Way and states his vows; today the lotus is most pure, and the palm leaves are proclaimed anew: the subtle and wondrous Buddha is unfathomable! To honor freedom from hindrances, We hereby bestow powdered incense. Uphold and cultivate it with diligence, always without regression. What you have thanked is noted."

Imperial Edict Regarding the Request to Search throughout the Realm for Sanskrit Manuscripts to Repair and Translate, one piece

1.31

In Ci'en, Jianfu, and other temples in the Central Capital, in Shengshan, Changshou, Fuguang, and other temples in the Eastern Capital, and in monasteries, temples, and villages across the various prefectures and counties, there are Sanskrit manuscripts brought in the past by Tripiṭaka masters such as the Great Omniscient One [Xuanzang], Yijing, Śubhakarasiṃha, Bodhiruci, and Ratnacinta.

1.32

The above memorial was presented by the Tripiṭaka śramaṇa Amoghavajra of Daxingshan Temple: Regarding the aforementioned Sanskrit manuscripts and others, of those brought by former Tripiṭaka masters, many remain untranslated. The months and years have been long, and the binding cords are mostly broken; that they are submerged, scattered, and lost is truly lamentable. If they are not repaired, I fear it will run contrary to the sacred teachings. Recently, I received the gracious imperial command permitting their translation. This affair requires investigating and examining to verify the subtle words. I request permission to inspect and search for them in all localities; where there is damage or omissions, they should be patched and repaired as needed. Any that can be propagated to assist the state and spread the transformation should be subsequently translated and reported to the throne, so that their merit may aid the Sacred Person, which would be most extraordinary. Should Heavenly Grace grant permission, please dispatch instructions to the relevant authorities.

1.33

The Secretariat-Chancellery issues this official notice to the Tripiṭaka Master Amoghavajra of Daxingshan Temple:

One Memorial Congratulating the Investiture of Empress Zhang.

1.56

The śramaṇa Amoghavajra states: I humbly observe that on this auspicious day, the Empress has been invested. I have humbly heard that heaven and earth exist and thus give birth to the myriad things; the single yin and single yang constitute the Dao. Thus they magically transform the various classes [of beings] and maternally nourish the multitude of subjects. In the times of former august kings, this was indeed a grand ceremonial institution. I humbly reflect that the Empress’s virtue makes manifest the gentle standard, and her merit aids the Spring Palace. Watching the clouds and mists, she knew of the auspicious return; standing beside the war chariot, she pushed the hubs of state. Your Majesty above accords with the luminous mandate, and below harmonizes with the earthly norm, complying with the hearts of the common folk and granting a Mother to the realm. The two archetypes are now established, and myriad blessings shall flourish. Throughout the entire realm, who does not offer congratulations? All the more so does Amoghavajra, having singularly received inquiries into the Way and long bathed in deep benevolence, feel a joy that leaps ten thousand times beyond ordinary measure. Unable to bear my extreme celebration, joy, awe, and trepidation, I respectfully present this memorial to offer congratulations. Amoghavajra, in sincerity and fear, respectfully states.

1.61

One Notification Dispatch of the Bureau of Sacrifices Granting Imperial Permission to Translate Scriptures and Treatises.

1.62

The Dhāraṇī Teaching's Vajraśekhara Yoga Sūtra and other texts, eighty works; Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna scriptures and treatises, twenty works, totaling one thousand two hundred fascicles.

1.63

The above memorialized by Daxingshan Temple Tripitaka Śramaṇa Amoghavajra: Amoghavajra has heard that those who continue the heritage of Emperor Yao inherit the imperial throne, and those who receive the Buddha’s entrustment transmit the Buddha’s teaching. Reflecting on this maxim, it has never been altered; it flows and flourishes for myriad generations, branching into a thousand boughs. Amoghavajra held the khakkhara and carried the water pitcher, journeying to India, searching through river valleys, and traversing foreign lands. Wherever I encountered sacred traces, I bowed, made requests, and paid reverence; whenever I heard of scriptural teachings, I exhausted myself in fervent prayer. I searched for their subtle essences and plumbed their deep mysteries; with sincere dedication I vowed to propagate them. Thus I obtained the aforementioned scriptures and treatises. Yet since arriving at the Central Capital, they have not yet been translated. Transcribing them is lacking, and their transmission and maintenance have been impeded. I particularly hope that Your Imperial Favor will compassionately permit their translation, so that the Dharma assembly may be spread anew to reopen the path of upholding the Dharma, and the Buddha-sun may rise once more to further amplify the work of exposition and proclamation. May the Heavenly Grace grant permission and please proclaim it to the competent office.

One Presentation Memorial for an Amber Image and the Sanskrit-Script Pratisarā Mantra.

1.79

One amber image of Ratnasambhava Tathāgata.

1.80

One Sanskrit-script copy of the Mahāpratisarā Dhāraṇī.

1.81

Regarding the above: in the past, when the Yellow River cleared, it initiated the cosmic destiny, and the lightning around the celestial pivot announced an auspicious omen. Falling precisely on the festival of Double Ninth, the sage of a thousand years was born. Because Your Majesty truly receives the precious throne, the image bears the name Ratnasambhava ("Born of Jewel"). Because Your Majesty gives rise to thoughts that effortlessly penetrate, the vidyā possesses the designation Pratisarā ("Accordance with Seeking"). The image can shine through with luminous clarity, just as Your Majesty illumines the four quarters. The vidyā is awe-inspiring against malevolent foes, just as Your Majesty overawes the myriad states. Having carefully examined the Vajraśekhara Sūtra, all Tathāgatas, upon attaining equal and perfect enlightenment, all receive the Ratnasambhava abhiṣeka. Indeed, Your Majesty's profound merit reaches Heaven, and the True Dharma governs the state; the circumstance aligns with the times, as if matching tallies. I humbly pray that You will slightly cultivate reverent mindfulness, encasing and wearing it upon Your person. Then the vidyā-holder's illumination will surely turn back [calamities] and expand the royal transformation to the Eastern Gates, while the principal deity extends protection and prolongs the Sage's longevity to the Southern Mountains. Incapable of containing my profound joy and celebration, I respectfully present this alongside the memorial. Lightly presuming to intrude upon the Imperial Screen, I humbly redouble my trembling. Respectfully presented.

1.83

Presented by Daxingshan Temple Tripitaka Śramaṇa Amoghavajra.

1.84

Rescript of the Emperor of Qianyuan's Radiant Culture, Civil and Martial Grand Sanctity, and Filial Responsiveness [Suzong]:

1.85

"The forms and icons of the Buddhas are as rare to appear as the udumbara. The secret treasury of the Tathāgatas and their divine incantations are difficult to conceive. Master, you broadly open the Emptiness school and can maintain the secret mudrās. Using this True Dharma to broadly protect Our person, We faithfully receive and uphold it, finding in it profound benefit."

1.86

One Request Memorial to Establish an Abhiṣeka Arena at Xingshan Temple (with Imperial Rescript in Black Ink).

1.87

Requesting Daxingshan Temple to prepare an abhiṣeka arena.

1.88

Regarding the above, your minister stealthily observes that the methods for dispelling calamities and defending against disasters do not exceed the Secret Mahāyāna. Among the gates of the Mahāyāna, abhiṣeka is paramount. Now, during this intercalary summer month, the hundred flowers are in full bloom. I humbly pray that You will command Tripitaka Amoghavajra to prepare an abhiṣeka arena at the aforementioned temple for the sake of the state. This arena has teachings for pacifying calamities and increasing benefits, and the ability to subdue and gladden. Upholding this power to eradicate the evil multitude, it above nourishes the Sage's boundless longevity, and taking this omen, long brings tranquility and peace. Your minister originally lacks talent and virtue, yet is humbled to receive Your commissions. Respectfully offering my foolish sincerity, my trembling and sweating redouble. If You grant your minister's petition, please issue an

Imperial Rescript in Black Ink: Approved as memorialized.

Qianyuan 3rd year, intercalary 4th month, 14th day. Presented by Chief Patrol Commissioner of the Imperial Palaces and Parks, Defender-Commandant against Insults, Commandant of the Right Inner Escort Directorate, Supernumerary Appointee with Equal Status, bestowed the Purple Gold Fish Bag, Inner Flying Dragon Commissioner, Minister Shi Yuancong.

1.91

One Imperial Edict for the Performance of Merit at Zhiju Temple, attached to the Dispatch of the Commander-in-Chief.

Shangyuan 1st year, 8th month, 25th day. Dispatch.

1.97

Opening the Office, Director of Army Affairs, Li Fuguo.

1.98

Commander-in-Chief, King of Yue, in attendance at the inner palace.

1.99

Reign of Daizong.

1.100

One Presentation Memorial for an Image of Mārīcī and the Sanskrit-Script Uṣṇīṣa Vijaya Dhāraṇī (with Imperial Response).

1.101

One carved white sandalwood image of Mārīcī (translated here as "Awe-Inspiring Light").

1.102

One Sanskrit-script copy of the Great Uṣṇīṣa Dhāraṇī.

1.103

Regarding the above: Amoghavajra by good fortune has encountered

1.104

the Sacred Destiny, and early served the glorious brightness. Thus meeting

1.105

the day of the Imperial Nativity, and further encountering the day of the Golden Wheel, I humbly reflect that

1.106

Your Majesty's longevity extends the precious imperial succession, and the statue bears the title of Majestic Radiance. Because

1.107

Your Majesty stands as head of the hundred kings, the mantra bears the title of Uṣṇīṣa. Upon examining the Great Uṣṇīṣa Sūtra, whenever all Tathāgatas attain equal and perfect enlightenment, they all receive this mantra; even down to imperial sovereigns of the golden wheel, none fail to honor and practice it. I humbly reflect that

1.108

Your Majesty has received Heaven's mandate and ascended the throne;

1.109

the imperial governance is ever renewed, and ruling the state with the true Dharma accords in tally with the spiritual. I humbly pray that You will briefly cultivate reverent mindfulness, sealing it up and wearing it [on Your person]. Then You will broadly

1.110

extend supreme transformation as in the era of Donghu, and lengthen

1.111

the Imperial Longevity to equal the Southern Mountains. Incapable of bearing the utmost joy and celebration, I respectfully present this memorial accompanying the items. Lightly transgressing the imperial presence, I humbly redouble my trepidation and trembling. Respectfully presented.

1.112

Baoying, 1st year, 10th month, 13th day.

1.113

Memorial presented by Śramaṇa Amoghavajra, Tripiṭaka Master of Daxingshan Temple.

1.114

Imperial Endorsement (Temple name Daizong, posthumous name Emperor Ruiwen Xiaowu):

"An auspicious image of the Dharma, and authentic texts on palm leaves: Southern India is already remote, and in the Central Realm they are hard to encounter. Out of compassion, the Superior One sealed and protected them as he came, not keeping them secret within the monastic community, but transmitting them to the imperial gates—this is indeed unprecedented! It brings truly great solace to Our mind."

Request to Establish an Abhiṣeka Arena: One Imperial Rescript in Black Ink

1.117

Amoghavajra, Tripiṭaka Śramaṇa of Daxingshan Temple, requests the establishment of an abhiṣeka arena on behalf of the state.

1.118

The above-named Amoghavajra has heard that Vairocana encompasses the myriad realms, and the secret seals and mantras absorb all scriptures. In accordance with their teachings, there are the sudden and the gradual: the gradual refers to the śrāvakas of the Hinayāna mounting the altar for the training precepts; the sudden refers to the abhiṣeka Dharma gate of the great bodhisattva beings. It is the level path to reaching the ultimate, and the orthodox rank for entering Buddhahood. 'Uṣṇīṣa' (crown) refers to the crown of the head, representing the supreme height of the great practice. 'Abhiṣeka' (sprinkling) refers to consecration, signifying the mindful protection of all Buddhas. How could transcendent rising and liberation not proceed from this? Therefore, subduing myself and toiling diligently without pause day and night, vowing in my heart to plumb its heights, how would I dare be indolent? I hope that during each summer and during the three extended fast months, [an arena] may be established in accordance with the scriptures, adorning pure flowers to open enlightenment and enabling all sentient beings to return to the true, so that the borders may be quieted and purified, and the Imperial Body enjoy myriad longevities. Unable to bear my utmost earnest devotion, I have respectfully come to the Right Silver Terrace Gate to present this memorial and submit this request. If the heavenly grace permits, I request the issuance of an imperial rescript in black ink granting the petition.

The above memorial is presented by the Tripiṭaka Śramaṇa Amoghavajra of Daxingshan Temple: The aforementioned temple was the very first built when Chang'an was initially established, intended to protect and pacify the imperial realm. Its corridors and halls are vast, occupying an entire ward. From antiquity, those who resided there were all famous and virtuous monks. In recent times, due to the passing away of the elder masters, the monastic assembly has withered away, and the proper deportment and rules have all fallen into disuse. Moreover, through the passage of many years, its terraces and halls have become desolate. When looking upon its past pure regulations, one can truly only sigh in sorrow. Although there are newly ordained monks, they are not yet skilled in the vinaya. Furthermore, in these times of hardship, affairs rely on the support of blessings. The aforementioned forty-nine bhadantas are all pure and eminent in their practice of the Way, thoroughly illuminating the scriptures and precepts, admired by the multitude, and worthy of being models. I humbly beg that their names be registered at this temple, and when vacancies arise, they may be filled successively, so that they may unite their strength to uphold it, repair the ruin and decay, and perpetually maintain the incense and lamps, so as to bless the imperial person. It is hoped that the currently appointed monastic officers may all be confirmed according to this settlement. In addition, because the temple is impoverished and damaged, I humbly beg that it be graciously exempted from various miscellaneous requisitions and levies, so that they may obtain an uninterrupted supply of provisions to repay the state and practice the Way. If the Heavenly Grace permits, I request that this be proclaimed and committed to the relevant bureau.
