On the fifth day, renyin, of the seventh month, wuxu, beginning on the new moon, in the year jiayin, the ninth year of Dali, the monastic disciple Huisheng respectfully offers a libation of milk and medicine, venturing to announce it to the spirit of the late Upādhyāya: / I humbly consider that filial devotion to parents is matched by that between master and disciple. How much more so when serving him intimately, deeply moved by prior karma! I attended his table and staff for more than twenty years, ashamed of my foolishness and dullness, yet bathed in his extraordinary favour. His kindness bore me like the earth; his virtue sheltered me like heaven. His wisdom illuminated me like the sun; his Dharma moistened me like a spring. / Why in a single morning did heaven tear apart? Why midway on the road did the earth overturn? Why in a single day did the sun set? Why midway on the road did the spring run dry? Wherever my eyes turn, tears brim; clutching and wailing, my breath chokes. Though arising and ceasing are the norm, yet bitterness and sorrow intertwine. The Brahmā voice has ceased at once; the revered face is gone forever. Disciples look at one another: upon what shall the Dharma assembly rely? Alas, how sorrowful! May he humbly deign to accept this offering.
