16.4

末田地羅漢。受阿難付囑法藏。令往罽賓國。先伏彼龍。即入三昧。令其國土六種震動。龍不自安。至末田地所。末田地入慈三昧。龍王興風吹之。袈裟角不動。復起雷電器仗。并捧大山欲相覆壓。即以神力變成天花。便聞空中偈言。

The Arhat Madhyāntika received the entrustment of the Dharma treasury from Ānanda and was ordered to go to the kingdom of Kaśmīra to first subdue the dragon there. He immediately entered samādhi, causing that realm to shake in six ways. The dragon, feeling insecure, came to Madhyāntika's dwelling. Madhyāntika entered the samādhi of loving-kindness. The dragon king raised a wind to blow upon him, but the hem of his kāṣāya did not move. He again raised thunder, lightning, and weapons, and held up a great mountain wishing to crush him, but through divine power it immediately transformed into heavenly flowers. Then a verse was heard in the air, saying:
