In the country of Mathurā, there was a man who renounced household life under Upagupta. Hearing the explanation of the contemplation of impurity and the like, he subdued the defilements through the contemplation of impurity and thought he had already accomplished what was to be done. Upagupta said, “You should be diligent and not entertain thoughts of indolence.” He replied, “I have already attained arhatship.” Upagupta said to him, “Have you seen the tavern woman in the country of Gandhāra (translated as ‘Earth-holding’)? This woman claims to have attained the Way, no different from you. Her defilements are not yet severed, yet she claims to have severed them; this is excessive pride. Go now and observe this woman to see whether she has attained the Way or not.” He replied, “I have not yet been able to see her; I wish to go to that country.” The master then gave him permission. At that time, the monk went to the country of Gandhāra, rested at the Tuṣita Monastery, arose early, put on his robes, took his bowl, and entered the settlement to beg for food. When the tavern woman took food wishing to give it to him, the monk looked at her and lustful attachment arose in his mind; he himself took parched-grain flour and curd from his bowl and gave them to the woman. Seeing this, the woman's mind also changed with lust, and she smiled, baring her teeth. The monk immediately entered the contemplation of impurity, even contemplating the body as white bones. From this contemplation, he attained the fruit of arhatship (from the tenth fascicle of the *Aśokarāja-sūtra*).
