Formerly, Ānanda reported an event: There was a śramaṇa who had attained the path of an anāgāmin. On a mountain, he boiled herbs to dye his robes. At that time, someone who had lost an ox searched everywhere, and upon seeing the smoke, went there. He saw that the herbs in the cauldron had all turned into cow bones, the alms bowl had transformed into a cow's head, and the kāṣāya robe had transformed into a cow's hide. The man then tied the bones to the śramaṇa's head and paraded him through the kingdom; the populace all saw it. A novice monk (śrāmaṇera) saw that midday had already passed, yet despite waiting persistently, he did not see his master arrive. He then went into the room and concentrated his thoughts, seeing that his master had been humiliated by people. He went there, placed his head and face at his master's feet, and asked when this had been decreed. The master said, "It is from long ago, an ancient sin." The novice said, "You may return for a short time to eat." The two of them were then released, and with spiritual supernormal powers, departed together. The novice had not yet attained the Way and still had anger that was not eliminated. Looking back and seeing how the upāsakas and the people of the kingdom had treated his master in this way, he made dragons rain down sand and stones to shake this kingdom and make them terrified. Just as he finished this thought, sand rained down on all four sides, and the city walls and houses were all destroyed and ruined. The master said, "In a past life of mine, I engaged in slaughtering cattle as a livelihood, and that is why I have incurred this calamity. For what reason have you now created sin? Go; there is no need for you to follow me anymore." The master said, "Such are sin and merit; can one not be cautious?" (From the upper fascicle of the Avadāna Sūtra).
