A Tripiṭaka monk of Kaśmīra who practiced the āraṇyaka rules went to a royal monastery where a great assembly was being held. The gatekeeper, seeing his coarse and ragged robes, barred the gate and would not let him proceed. This happened repeatedly; because of his shabby robes, he could never enter. He then devised an expedient: he borrowed fine robes and came back. The gatekeeper did not forbid him. Once he arrived and sat in the assembly, he received all kinds of delicious food, which he first offered to his robes. The people asked him, “Why do you do this?” He replied, “I, a monk, came many times and was repeatedly denied entry. Now, solely on account of these robes, I am able to sit here and receive all kinds of delicious food. Therefore, I first give it to the robes” (extracted from the fourth fascicle of the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa).
