The King of Vārāṇasī, in the summer heat, dwelt upon a high pavilion. Sitting upon a seven-jeweled bed, he had a maidservant rub him and smear his body with ox-head candana incense. The maidservant wore many bangles on her arms, and as she rubbed the king's body, the sound of the bangles filled his ears, which greatly vexed him. He ordered her to take off the bangles one by one; only a single bangle remained, quiet and making no sound. The king then awakened, saying, "The state, ministers, commoners, and court ladies are full of busyness and distress, just like this." He immediately abandoned desire, dwelt alone in contemplation, and became a pratyekabuddha. His hair and beard fell off naturally, and he wore natural robes; descending from the pavilion, he left the household and entered the mountains through the power of his own supernatural foot. Through such causes and conditions, he was a middling-grade pratyekabuddha. If someone makes a vow to become a pratyekabuddha, planting this wholesome root, then when there is no Buddha in the world, that wholesome root ripens, and weary of the world, he leaves the household and attains the Way, being named a pratyekabuddha. (Extracted from the middle fascicle of the *Dhyāna-samādhi-sūtra*).
