South of Mount Sumeru there is a great tree four thousand li high. The pakṣa birds constantly roost upon it, and the tree is always motionless. There was a small bird, shaped like a quail, which came to stay upon it, and the tree immediately shook and trembled. The pakṣa asked the tree deity: “You have no sense! My body is heavy and large, yet you are naturally motionless; but when a small bird comes, you shake and tremble instead?” The deity said: “Although this bird is small, it has eaten an adamantine stone from the ocean bottom. As for the adamantine stone, wherever it falls, nothing fails to be shattered and scattered. Therefore, I am greatly terrified and cannot rest secure” (from the seventh fascicle of the *Ten Fascicle Parables Sūtra*).
