王心念。故倍加莊嚴嚴治道路。老病死等悉令不見。時王與鳩那羅同載一車送之。近路將欲分別。手抱兒頸。見鳩那羅眼。啼泣而言。
The king thought of him and therefore redoubled the decoration and repair of the roads, ordering that all old age, sickness, and death be kept out of sight. At that time the king and Kuṇāla rode in the same carriage to see him off. When they drew near the road where they were about to part, [the king] embraced his son's neck with his hands, gazed upon Kuṇāla's eyes, and wept, saying:
