Formerly, King Prasenajit had two consorts. The son of the first consort was named Virūḍhaka, and the son of the second consort was named Jeta (rendered as "Most Victorious" in the Liang). On the day Jeta was first born, treasures presented from the four quarters arrived all at once. The king said, "None of my sons' births has ever been like this; he may be named Jeta." When he grew up and studied, there was no classic he did not master. For him the king erected a separate residence made of the seven treasures, with gold and silver men and women at the left and right of the gate, holding treasure bowls filled to the brim with the seven precious things; though taken away day and night, they were constantly full as before. The crown prince [Virūḍhaka] was jealous and dispatched troops to seize them. At that time there were more than five hundred heavenly cavalry guarding and protecting Jeta's house. Seeing them, Virūḍhaka's army retreated in fear. The crown prince was furious. Jeta came to ask him, "Last night you sent troops to comfort me; did you conceal soldiers within [your camp] wishing to rebel?" Jeta replied, "I would not dare fail to foster the civil and military, but within I do not have an inch of weaponry." Virūḍhaka sent [men] to inspect, and there were none inside or out. Virūḍhaka was appeased and reported the matter fully to the Buddha. The Buddha said, "Because Jeta's planting of merit encountered firm causes, it cannot be seized. In the time of Vipaśyin Buddha, a person went to a monastery to offer a meal to the saṅgha, and afterwards gave one male and one female servant to sweep and clean the monastery. From then on, he received immeasurable blessings among gods and humans; this was Jeta." (Extracted from Fascicle 1 of the *Ten-Fascicle Avadāna Sūtra*)
