For instance, the ṛṣi Udraka attained the five supernormal powers and flew to the royal palace to eat. According to the custom of that country, the king's chief consort bowed down and touched his feet. At the touch of the consort's hand, he immediately lost his supernormal powers. He asked the king for a chariot, rode out in it, and returned to his original place. Entering the forest, he sought the five supernormal powers once more. Focused with single-minded devotion, he was on the verge of attaining them when birds in the trees chirped clamorously, disturbing his mind. Leaving the trees, he went to the waterside to seek concentration, but again heard the sound of fish fighting and agitating the water. Failing to attain dhyāna, this man grew angry: "I shall kill all fish and birds!" Much later, by contemplation he attained concentration and was born in the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. When his lifespan there ended, he was reborn below as a flying fox, killing fish and birds. Committing boundless offenses, he fell into an evil destiny. (Taken from the seventeenth fascicle of the Dazhidulun).
