Before the Buddha appeared in the world, Śakra Devānām Indra constantly went to the rishi Dvaipāyana's dwelling to listen to the Dharma. Later, on one occasion, riding in a jewel-adorned carriage, he wished to visit the rishi. Śacī thought, 'Today Śakra has abandoned me to visit other court ladies.' She then concealed her form and boarded the carriage. Śakra was unaware. Just as they were about to arrive at the rishi's dwelling, he looked back and saw her, and asked, 'Why have you come? The rishi does not wish his eyes to see women. You must return to the palace.' Śacī did not want to leave. Śakra struck her with a lotus stem. Śacī apologized to Śakra with a woman's soft and melodious voice. The rishi heard it and aroused lustful desire; his coiled hair instantly fell off, and his auditory consciousness deteriorated.
