40.22

昔摩因提梵志。生女端正。國王太子大臣長者來求不得。見佛金色三十二相。便自念言。如此人比我女便與。還家謂婦言。今得女婿踰於我女。即莊飾女眾寶瓔珞。將女出城。母見佛跡文現分明。謂父言曰。寧知空出終不得婿。婦說偈言。

In the past, the brahmacārin Māgandiya had a daughter who was exceptionally beautiful. Kings, crown princes, ministers, and elders came to seek her hand, but none could obtain her. Seeing the Buddha’s golden color and thirty-two marks, he thought to himself, “If someone compares to this person, I will give my daughter to him.” He returned home and said to his wife, “Today I have found a son-in-law who surpasses our daughter.” He immediately adorned his daughter with many precious jewels and necklaces, and took his daughter out of the city. The mother saw the Buddha's footprints, clearly marked, and said to the father, “Do you know that you are going in vain and will never get him as a son-in-law?” The wife spoke a verse:
