The Buddha entered the city of Śrāvastī for alms. His robe had a slight tear. A brāhmaṇa saw that the Buddha's robe was damaged, went to his house, obtained a small piece of white fine cotton, and offered it to the Buddha, saying, "May the Tathāgata accept this patch to mend his robe." The Buddha accepted it. The Buddha bestowed a prophecy upon him that in a future life, within two asaṃkhyeyas and one hundred kalpas, he would attain Buddhahood. He departed in joy. The eminent nobles, elders, and householders in the kingdom said, "Why does the Bhagavat grant a great reward for a small gift?" Each of them tore up fine cotton to make various robes for the Tathāgata. In the past, there was a Buddha named Vipaśyin. At that time, the king was named Bandhuma. A minister invited that Buddha and the saṅgha to receive offerings for three months. That Buddha consented. King Bandhuma said to that Buddha, "I covet the chance to make offerings to the Buddha and the saṅgha for three months." That Buddha told Bandhuma, "I have already accepted that minister's invitation." The king said to the minister, "The Buddha resides in my kingdom. Even though you have invited him, you should now yield to me." The minister replied to the king, "If the great king can guarantee my life, guarantee that the Tathāgata will always dwell here, and guarantee that the kingdom will always be safe and secure, then I will rest my intent." The king further reasoned with him, "You invite him for one day, and I will invite him for one day." The minister then consented, and each fulfilled his wish. The king prepared the three robes for the Tathāgata, and also made seven-strip robes for each of the ninety thousand bhikṣus. The minister at that time who offered robes and food to the Buddha and the saṅgha was myself (extracted from the Sūtra of the Wise and the Foolish, Fascicle 13).
