When the Buddha was in the world, there was a brāhmaṇa who had two daughters, both of whom were fair and beautiful. He deliberately suspended gold, seeking for ninety days anyone who could criticize his daughters as ugly, in which case he would give them the gold. In the end, no one responded to the recruitment. He brought them to where the Buddha was. The Buddha then criticized them, saying, "These daughters are both ugly; there is not a single good thing about them." Ānanda said to the Buddha, "These daughters are beautiful, yet the Buddha says they are repulsive. What about them is not good?" The Buddha said, "A person's eye not looking at sensual forms is what is good; the same applies to the ears, nose, and mouth. The body not clinging to soft and smooth touch is what is good. The body's hands not stealing others' property is what makes for good hands. Not committing such deeds is what is truly good. When the eyes look at forms, the ears listen to sounds, the nose smells fragrances, the body takes pleasure in soft and smooth touch, and the hands delight in stealing others' property—such things are none of them good." (From the Sūtra of Diverse Parables.)
