41.37

說是偈已。繞護喜三匝還詣精舍。而白佛言。寧可入道受具戒不。即度火鬘受具足戒。佛語舍利弗。時火鬘童子則我身是。火鬘父者今父王真淨是。護喜者頻勸我出家。則是作道善知識也。我前向護喜惡語道。迦葉佛禿頭沙門有何道。故六年受日食一麻一米大豆小豆如是（出興起行經下卷）。

Having spoken this verse, he circumambulated Nandipāla three times and returned to the monastery. He said to the Buddha, "May I enter the path and receive full ordination?" [The Buddha] then delivered Jyotirmāla and granted him full ordination. The Buddha said to Śāriputra, "At that time, the young man Jyotirmāla was myself. Jyotirmāla's father was my current father, King Śuddhodana. Nandipāla, who repeatedly urged me to leave household life, was a good friend who assisted on the path. Because I previously spoke harsh words to Nandipāla, saying, 'What Dharma could Kāśyapa Buddha, that shaven-headed śramaṇa, possess?', I had to endure eating one sesame seed, one grain of rice, horse gram, and peas a day for six years."
