There was a caravan leader who led several merchants into a perilous place. They met a rākṣasa demon, who blocked them with its hand and said, “Halt! Do not move! I will not allow you to go!” The caravan leader immediately struck it with his right fist, but his fist stuck to the demon and could not be pulled free. He then struck it with his left fist, and it likewise could not be pulled free. He kicked it with his right foot, and the same happened. He butted it with his head, and his head also stuck. The demon asked, “Being in such a state now, what do you intend to do? Has your heart ceased yet?” He answered, “Though my five limbs are bound, my heart will never cease. With the power of vigor I will keep striking you!” The demon then thought, “This man’s courage is exceedingly great.” It then said, “The power of your vigor is great; you truly will not cease. I now let you go.” (From the Dazhidu lun, scroll 16.)
