The Gandharva King resides in a city on the right of the Snow Mountains named Vaiśālī. When the world was first formed, a wind-wheel arose named Adornment, which created this palace city. To the north of the city are seven black mountains, and north of the mountains is the Fragrant Mountain, situated among ten jewelled mountains, where sounds of music are constantly heard (the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra says they are the celestial musicians). The mountain has two caves: the first is named Day, and the second Good Day. They are composed of the seven jewels, soft, fragrant, and clean, like celestial garments. The Gandharva King resides in their midst accompanied by five hundred gandharvas. When the Buddha was on Mount Vediyaka (located north of Magadha), Śakra Devānām Indra instructed the musician deity Pañcaśikha to hold a lapis lazuli lute and sing before the Buddha. The Buddha said, "You are able to praise the Tathāgata with lute and song; your sorrowful, harmonious, and plaintive tunes move human hearts. In these sounds, you express how desire binds, pure conduct, the śramaṇa, and nirvāṇa—all these meanings are fully present." Śakra looked at him and said, "I will appoint you to your father's position, to be the supreme among your kind, and give you a wife." (from the Dīrghāgama and the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra).
