The hunter reported all this in detail to the king. All the people of the state learned of it and were universally moved by this compassion and faithfulness. A beast's benevolent deeds surpassed righteousness itself, and there was none who did not venerate it with sighs. Because of this, hunting and killing were brought to an end. The deer returned, calling its herd and whistling to its companions, roaming and gathering, each resting peacefully in its place. The Buddha said, "The deer of that time was myself. The two fawns were Rāhula and Cūḍapanthaka. The king of that state was Śāriputra. The hunter who shot was Ānanda" (Extracted from the Luzi jing).
