There was a woman who placed her infant in a certain spot. A wolf carried the infant on its back and ran off. People of that time pursued and overtook it, saying to it, "Why are you carrying off another's child now?" The wolf replied, "This child's mother is my enemy. For five hundred lifetimes she constantly ate my children, and for five hundred lifetimes I have constantly killed her children. If she can relinquish her old feelings of enmity, I too can relinquish mine." The people said to the child's mother, "You should relinquish your enmity." The child's mother replied, "I have now relinquished it." The wolf observed the child's mother: though her mouth spoke of relinquishing it, her heart did not let it go. So it harmed the child and departed (Extracted from the Chao pidan, fascicle 28).
