五百天人聞佛語已即得道跡。五百婆羅門聞罪福之報。而自歎曰。吾等學仙積有年數。未蒙果報。不如獼猴戲笑為福得生天上。佛德實妙。稽首佛足願為弟子。佛言。善來比丘。即成沙門精進得道（出法句經第一卷）。

Having heard the Buddha's words, the five hundred devas immediately attained the path [of stream-entry]. Hearing of the retribution of wrongdoing and merit, the five hundred brāhmaṇas sighed to themselves, “We have studied the ṛṣi path for accumulated years without experiencing its fruit and retribution. We are not even equal to the monkeys who playfully produced merit and attained rebirth in heaven! The Buddha's virtue is truly wondrous.” They bowed their heads at the Buddha's feet and wished to become his disciples. The Buddha said, “Welcome, bhikṣus!” They immediately became śramaṇas, practiced vigorously, and attained the path. (Extracted from the first fascicle of the Dharmapada.)
