Formerly, a king had a monkey that repeatedly played with a maidservant without stopping. A brahmacārin said to the king, “You should separate this maidservant from the monkey.” The king said, “What harm can come of it that I should separate them?” Later, the maidservant came from outside carrying a vessel of food and a large staff. The monkey ran over and pulled at the maidservant. Enraged, the maidservant kicked the staff and struck it. The monkey fell into the fire, burning its fur. It bolted into the firewood, setting fire to the houses, palaces, and jewel storehouses, which were all reduced to ashes. Only then did the king realize the truth of the brahmacārin's words.
