過去世有異曠野。水牛王頓止其中。遊行食草而飲泉水。時水牛王與眾眷屬。有所至湊獨在其前。顏貌姝好威神巍巍名德超異忍辱和雅行止安詳。有一獼猴住在道邊。見水牛王與眷屬俱。心懷忿怒興于嫉妬。便即揚塵瓦石。而坌擲之輕慢毀辱。水牛默然受之不報。行過未久。更有一部水牛王尋從後來。獼猴見之亦復罵詈揚塵打擲。後一部眾。見前牛王默然不校效之。忍辱不以為恨。是等眷屬過去。未久有一水牛犢。尋從後來。隨逐群牛。於是獼猴逐之罵詈毀辱輕易。水犢懷恨不喜。見前等類忍辱不恨。亦復學效。去道不遠大叢樹間。時有樹神遊居其中。問水牛王。卿等何故覩此獼猴猥見罵詈。而反忍辱默聲不應。水牛報曰。

In a past age, there was a distant wilderness where a buffalo king stayed. He roamed about, eating grass and drinking spring water. At that time, when the buffalo king and his retinue gathered and traveled anywhere, he alone went before them. His appearance was handsome and fine, his spiritual majesty imposing, his renown and virtue extraordinary; he was patient, harmonious, and elegant, and his deportment was serene. There was a monkey dwelling by the side of the road. Seeing the buffalo king together with his retinue, he harbored anger and gave rise to jealousy, whereupon he raised dust, tiles, and stones, pelting and throwing them at him in slight, contempt, and insult. The buffalo silently endured it and did not retaliate. Not long after he passed by, another herd with its buffalo king followed behind. When the monkey saw them, he likewise cursed them and raised dust, striking and pelting them. That later herd, seeing the former buffalo king remain silent without contending, imitated him, enduring the insult without harboring resentment. Not long after this retinue had passed, there was a buffalo calf following behind, chasing after the herd of buffaloes. Thereupon the monkey chased it, cursing, insulting, and slighting it. The buffalo calf harbored resentment and was displeased; but seeing its predecessors enduring the insults without resentment, it also followed suit. Not far from the road, amidst a great grove of trees, there was a tree spirit dwelling and wandering within them. He asked the buffalo king, 'Why did you, when seeing this monkey coarsely cursing you, instead endure the insult and remain silent without responding?' The buffalo replied:
