"Though in body I am a base beast,
Not knowing the ways of benevolence and righteousness,
How could I receive such merciful kindness,
And once gone, never return?
I would rather face the agony of being torn apart
Than preserve myself through falsehood!
I grieve for my two fawns in their helplessness;
I beg for only a brief respite.
If there is an evil person in the world
Who stirs up discord within the bhikṣu-saṃgha,
Destroys stūpas and ruins Buddhist monasteries,
Or slays an arhat,
Or in turn turns against and harms father and mother,
Wife, children, or male and female servants—
If I should fail to return,
May my sin be greater than these!"
