48.58

龍王白佛言。我從劫初止住大海。從拘樓秦佛時。大海之中妻子甚少。今者海龍眷屬繁多。佛告龍王。其於佛法出家。違戒犯行不捨破戒者多生龍中。

The nāga king said to the Buddha: "Since the beginning of the kalpa, I have resided in the great ocean. In the time of Krakucchanda Buddha, wives and children in the great ocean were exceedingly few. Now, the ocean nāgas' retinues are exceedingly numerous." The Buddha told the nāga king: "Those who renounce household life in the Buddha-Dharma, transgress the precepts, commit impure conduct, and do not abandon precept-breaking are mostly reborn among the nāgas.
