48.83

南海卒涌驚濤浸灌。有三大魚流入小洲涇。自相謂言。我等厄此及曼水未減。宜可逆上還歸大海。復礙水洲不得越過。第一魚者盡力跳洲得度。次魚復憑草獲過。其第三魚氣力消竭。為獵者得之。佛見而說頌曰。

The southern ocean suddenly surged, its alarming billows flooding in. Three large fish drifted into the canal of a small islet. They said to one another: 'We are trapped here. While the water has not yet receded, we should go against the current and return to the great ocean.' But an islet obstructed them so they could not cross over. The first fish leaped over the islet with all its strength and crossed safely. The next fish crossed over by relying on grass. The third fish had its strength exhausted, and was caught by a hunter. The Buddha saw this and spoke a verse:
