11.18

One snake praised forbearance, and the other snake respectfully accepted it and ultimately did not harm the viper. One snake said, 'Let us return to the ocean.' Agreeing with one another, they departed together. Thereupon they displayed their awe-inspiring spiritual power, shaking heaven and moving the earth, raising clouds and causing rain to fall, so that humans and ghosts were all alarmed. The viper was terrified, staring like a corpse without consciousness, and starved for seven days wishing to harm them. The dragon [who wished to retaliate] was Ānanda; the dragon who spoke of forbearance was my own self; and the venomous viper was Devadatta. (Extracted from Fascicle 5 of the Liudu ji jing)
